A typical BuzzJam lesson - A whole class setting

Ahead of the lesson

  • The teacher selects a BuzzJam that focuses on the vocabulary to be studied.
  • If they wish, the story can be customised by the teacher and extra notes added. They can save the BuzzJam with their changes to be used in the lesson
  • If desired, the teacher prints the final page of the BuzzJam for groups of pupils to complete.*

During the lesson

  • Using a digital projector the teacher shows Page 1 of the BuzzJam to the class and works with the class to review the vocabulary listed.
  • Using a digital projector the teacher shows the completed part of the BuzzJam to the class and, as a class, pupils practice the phrases.
  • Pupils work in groups to complete the story through role-play or discussion. They can record their ideas on paper, wipe clean laminated printouts or using a computer by typing directly into the pdf.
  • Pupils present their story to others and the teacher comments on the language used.

Following the lesson

  • The teacher can make the BuzzJam available to pupils via the school network or learning environment.
  • Pupils can complete the story for homework, using the ideas from their group and the others who presented, and submit it to the teacher for marking.

* Teachers may wish to laminate A4 print-outs of the final page of each BuzzJam, to enable them to be re-used. Pupils can write on the speech areas with dry-wipe pens. The graphics on the final page of each BuzzJam have been simplified to reduce printing costs.

BuzzJams use the most effective learning approaches, discussion groups, practice by doing and teaching others.
